Ductless Mini-Split
The ductless mini-split was designed by the Japanese company Mitsubishi in response to the noisiness, energy costs and space taken by regular HVAC systems. It is a small, efficient system that does not use any ductwork to cool or heat.
The system is made of three components:
- The indoor unit that has a coil and fan, which can be placed on the wall or ceiling
- The condenser located outside
- The remote control
The indoor unit and the outside condenser are usually connected by a refrigerant line and cables instead of using ductwork.
The best use of a ductless mini-spilt is for "add-on" rooms. Such as patios, basements, attics, garages or rooms too small for ductwork. There are also ductless systems that cool up to 8 rooms known as a ductless multi-split.
It's easy to install and so it is also good for old homes or homes without a central heating/cooling system. It's great for any place in your home where your HVAC system does not or can not cover, or if you do not wish to expand the previous ductwork of your home.
Aside from the hassle-free installation compared to a traditional HVAC system, it is also very energy efficient and quiet. Many ductless systems are ENERGY STAR qualified.
