How to Minimize Spring Allergies in Your Home

Looks like spring is coming in early this year! And while we won’t complain about the early onset of warm temperatures, we have been noticing a lot more sneezing around the B & G Heating & Air Conditioning offices…looks like allergy season came early too!

Most people think duct cleaning is something they only need to do in the winter, since that’s the point when indoor air contaminants reach their peak. What they forget, however, is that pollen, dust ragweed, dust mites and other contaminants are at their highest during the spring, and can easily find their way into your duct system. Over the season they’ll accumulate, forming a layer of allergenic debris that will sit there until you turn on your AC, then be blown through your home for allergies round two!

Fortunately, there are ways to reduce the levels of indoor contaminants that make their way into your HVAC system this spring:

Keep doors and windows closed – needless to say, if you keep your doors and windows closed in the spring, you’ll let fewer allergens into the house. This will help you keep your own allergy symptoms under control while cutting down on the level of pollen accumulation in your ducts.

Choose the right filters, and change them regularly – if you’re particularly sensitive to seasonal allergies, look for air filters with MERV ratings from 5 – 8. These will provide more protection from indoor contaminants than the ones you buy at Lowes or Home Depot. Just make sure you change them regularly – since they trap a lot of stuff, they fill up quickly and will block your AC airflow.

Keep carpets and furniture clean – anything upholstered, including carpets and furniture, is highly effective at trapping pollen and other indoor allergens. This means every time you sit on the couch or walk on the rug, you’re kicking it all back up so it circulates through the air and, eventually, ends up in your ducts. Regular vacuuming can greatly reduce the amount of pollen in your home.

Have your ducts cleaned – of course, the safest and most effective way to get pollen out of your ducts is to call Magnolia Heating & Air Conditioning for duct cleaning! Our duct cleaning professionals will remove all of the contaminants from inside your ducts so you can breathe freely all summer long.
