While Spring has recently arrived, Summer is just around the corner. Before the temperatures skyrocket (because it’s Florida), consider getting an HVAC system with a higher SEER rating!

Getting a system with a higher SEER rating will save energy AND costs in the long run. Higher SEER rated systems put out more than a lower rating would for the same amount of power. We already have an article about SEER Ratings, which you can read here.

If you don’t need another system right now, then think about having your system cleaned. Having your system maintenanced can increase efficiency, performance, relibility and the life of the system itself.

We can install a new system for you, we can check on your system for you, whatever you need call B & G Heating and Air today!

You need an air conditioner and have been looking around for one, and one thing that usually shows up on these descriptions is something like “13 SEER”. What does the number represent? What does SEER mean? It’s actually a very important detail that can save you hundreds on your energy bill!

So what is a SEER Rating?

SEER is an acronym which stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. An air conditioner’s SEER Rating tells you how efficient it is. It is the performance of the system – the amount of cooling put out – in relation to the amount of energy it uses. The higher the SEER, the more efficient the system is. SEER is calculated by the amount of cooling supplied (BTU) divided by the power used (watt-hours) during the cooling season, the time when an air conditioner is running.

And that means…?

It can be compared to a car’s MPG. One car might have 1 gallon = 5 miles. Another might have 1 gallon = 20 miles. More miles for the same amount of energy. The SEER Rating of an air conditioner will let you know how much cooling/BTU (miles) can be put out for a certain amount of watt-hours (gallon of gas).

Make a little more sense now?

Let’s compare two air conditioners with different SEER Ratings.

3 ton 13 SEER system

compared to

3 ton 18 SEER system

We’ll have it at 18,500 BTUs, with .09 cents per kilowatt (1,000 Watts), and the amount of hours spent cooling at 1,500.

[18,500BTUs x (.09cents/1,000Watts) x 1,500hrs]/13 SEER

The 13 SEER with these specifications would cost about $192 per year.

[18,500BTUs x (.09cents/1,000Watts) x 1,500hrs]/18 SEER

The 18 SEER with these specifications would cost about $139 per year.

So what do I need to know?

How much one kiloWatt costs you per hour (ex. 10 cents per 1000 watts per hour)

How many hours are spent during the cooling season (ex. 2000 hours)

Then you can compare two similar machines with the same BTU output (ex. they both have 30,000BTUs) and different SEER ratings (ex. SEER 14 and a SEER 20). The higher the SEER Rating the lower your energy costs.

Once more using these examples:

[30,000BTUs x (.10cents/1000Watts) x 2,000hrs]/14 SEER

14 SEER would cost $429 per year.

[30,000BTUs x (.10cents/1000Watts) x 2,000hrs]/20 SEER

20 SEER would cost $300 per year.

That’s saving $129 per year with the 20 SEER when compared to a 14 SEER!

The minimum SEER Rating

In January 2006, the minimum standard for new air conditioners went from 10 SEER to 13 SEER. If you have a 12 SEER or lower it can still be used of course, but once it’s time to replace it, the lowest you can get is 13 SEER.

Programmable thermostats come in many different designs and come with numerous features, depending on the maker and style. With certain settings, you can ensure that your programmable thermostat cools and heats when it needs to and save yourself some money on the energy bill.

Features of Programmable Thermostats

How much do you need to customize your cooling and heating settings? Most thermostats come with a separate heating and cooling program. There are all sorts of different settings available. A lot of programmable thermostats have four time periods to set temperatures to: these are usually referred to “Morning”, “Day”, “Evening”, and “Night”. More advanced thermostats allow even more time periods than four to be set. Aside from time periods during one day, days during the week can also be customized, and also vary with each model of thermostat.

Some run one cycle, keeping the day settings the same for every day of the week.

More advanced thermostats have a weekday schedule and a weekend schedule (referred to as a “5-2″ setting).

And similar to the above, there’s some that have a weekday schedule and two separate schedules for the two weekend days (referred to as a “5-1-1″ setting).

There are also some that allow a schedule for every day of the week (referred to as a “7 day” setting).

Some thermostats have the capability to remind you when the filters need changing. It’s important to change the filters when they need to as it keeps the system efficient, lessens the strain and costs you less. An alert when the battery needs to be changed, which is usually once a year, is available on most programmable thermostats.

Obviously, programmable thermostats come in many variations, and knowing how you’d like to control when your cooling and heating occurs will help you choose what kind you’ll need (because just as obviously, more advanced thermostats are more expensive and maybe you don’t need that much customization). And before knowing how you’d like to control your cooling and heating, you must be aware for what settings will help you use less energy and save on your energy bills.

How Can You Save on Your Energy Bills?

First of all, you cannot save energy just by having the thermostat installed and letting it run. Successfully saving energy and money depends totally on you!

Around half of the energy bill is spent on heating and cooling. Setting your thermostat the right way will help you save (energy, your money, the environment too)! So what can you do?

During the cooling season:

While you’re away from home during the summer, setback the temperature that you’re comfortable with by at least 7 degrees F for at least 8 hours. What time do you get back? You can set it to go to what a comfortable amount of cooling is for you, around 30-60 minutes before you walk in. While you’re sleeping, setback the temperature by at least 4 degrees F for at least 10 hours.

The preferred temperature to set it to while you’re at home during the cooling season is at least 78 degrees F.

So if the temperature is 78 degrees F while you’re there, you should program your thermostat to 85 degrees F while you’re away at work. While you sleep it should be programmed at 82 degrees F.

During the heating season:

Similar to the cooling season, but with different numbers of course. While you’re away from home during the winter, setback the temperature that you’re comfortable with by at least 8 degrees F for at least 8 hours. You can also set the thermostat to start heating your home 30-60 minutes before you get back. While you’re sleeping, setback the temperature by at least 8 degrees F, for at least 10 hours.

The preferred temperature to set it to while you’re at home during the heating season is at most 70 degrees F.

So if the temperature is 70 degrees F while you’re there, you should program the thermostat to 62 degrees F while you’re away from home and while you’re sleeping.

You can manually change the temperature when needed, while the thermostat’s schedule stays the same. If in the morning you set it to 78 degrees F, it’ll setback during the next time period.

If you are able to properly use your programmable thermostat, you can save up to $180 every year in energy costs!

If you need to install a programmable thermostat in your home and save energy call the best HVAC service in Florida.

Are you wasting money on lost heat every year? Do you know how to tell if you are? Every year, thousands of families in the Florida waste hundreds of dollars on heat that ends up going into the walls or radiating out through the attic! Fun fact – you can tell which homes are losing heat by looking at people’s roofs – if they are covered in snow after a big snowstorm, the people inside are probably toasty warm. If the snow is melting, the homeowners are losing a lot of heat! Unfortunately, this method will not work in Florida

Fortunately, there are a number of easy ways to save energy at home – the trick is knowing where you’re losing it in the first place!

Where do homes lose the most heat?

Leaky ductwork – your ducts are one of the most crucial, and most often overlooked, components of your HVAC system. In fact, leaky ducts account for approximately 30% of lost heating and cooling efficiency! If you have leaky ductwork, heat that is destined for your home ends up collecting within your walls, never making it into the rooms that actually need to be heated!

Holes in exterior walls – Even if you can’t see them, you might be surprised at the number of holes and leaks you have between your home and the outside. Over time, whether as a result of poor constr

uction or just shifting and settling over time, you may end up with almost invisible gaps where windows, doors and walls aren’t joined up perfectly. As a result, heat leaks out of your home slowly but surely, causing your energy bills to slowly creep up.

Poor attic insulation

– poor insulation is right up there with leaky ducts in terms of letting heat escape from your home. Since heat rises, most of the heat from your furnace or heat pump will eventually make its way into the attic. And if your attic isn’t properly insulated, all the heat that gets up into your attic will leak out into the outside air – you could end up paying to make the outside warmer!

Improperly sized heating systems – we’ve seen this one far too many times! When it comes to installing a furnace or heat pump in your home, the SEER and AFUE mean (almost) nothing if the heating system isn’t the right size for your home. If your heating system is oversized, call B & G Heating & Air Conditioning! We can measure your home and help you decide what size heating system is best, and then provide furnace or heat pump replacement to make sure your system is as efficient as possible.

How to Save Energy at Home

Weatherize your home annually – there are a lot of simple things you can do to save energy at home by minimizing air leakage and tighten up your home to make sure you’re heating your home as efficiently as possible!

Add more insulation to your attic – this one’s fairly obvious – adding insulation is a great way to save energy in your home! Adding new insulation will prevent the fuel you’re using to heat your home from escaping into the outdoor winter air!

Replace your improperly sized heating system – if your heating system was poorly installed the first time and you need a heating and air conditioning company to replace it with a newer, more efficient model, call B & G Heating & Air Conditioning! We will size up your home and install a furnace or heat pump that will keep you cozy and warm while saving you money!

If you want to install a furnace in Jacksonville and save energy in your home, call B & G Heating & Air Conditioning today!

If you’ve been running your furnace for a long time, every now and then you might hear it making some strange noises. Around this time, we at B & G Heating & Air Conditioning start getting calls from people all around the area asking what the different noises mean, and whether or not they should start thinking about furnace repair. That’s why we’ve made things easier by writing out the most common noises people hear – and what to do about them!

Most Common Furnace Noises

Whining

If your furnace is making a whining noise, it most likely means you’ve got an air leak somewhere in your furnace. The most common places your furnace can leak air are the base, combustion air blower and return air grille. No matter where you’ve got air leaks, it’s generally a serious problem you should have fixed right away.

Should I get my furnace repaired? : YES.

Moaning

If your furnace is moaning, it’s probably because of worn motor beatings. If the noise gets really bad, it may be time to install a new motor and wheel.

Should I get my furnace repaired? : YES.

Low Rattling Noise

If you hear a low rattling noise about 30 seconds before your blower kicks on, you could have a serious problem like a crack in your heat exchanger. This should be checked out and fixed right away – otherwise it could result in a carbon monoxide leak!

Should I get my furnace repaired? : YES.

Clicking and Wooshing Noise

If you hear this strange combination of noises, it could mean a gas valve is leaking. A Magnolia Heating & Air Conditioning technician can help you figure out where your furnace is leaking gas.

Should I get my furnace repaired? : YES.

Other Common Furnace Noises

A consistent rattling noise may indicate that something in your ductwork is loose

A series of booming or popping noises could mean the metal ducts are expanding

Loud booms may be the result of dirty burners

When it comes down to it, your furnace is not supposed to make any weird noises. If you hear something coming from your furnace and you want to have a B & G Heating & Air Conditioning technician come check it out, call us today!
